JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was an American artist who rose to fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He began as a graffiti artist in New York City under the tag SAMO, creating cryptic, poetic street messages. His work quickly moved into the fine-art world, where he became one of the most influential figures in the Neo-Expressionist movement. Basquiat had a well-known friendship and collaboration with Warhol. Their joint works stirred controversy but also helped solidify Basquiat as a major force in contemporary art. Basquiat is now regarded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His works regularly sell for tens of millions of dollars, and his influence can be seen in contemporary art, fashion, music, and pop culture.
